History

History :

The Muslim Community of North East Tennessee (MCNET) as an organization was formed in the beginning of 1991. Prior to that there were various homes, basements, racquetball courts, and a MSA chapter  at ETSU which had dedicated room in the Math Building at ETSU for its activities  including Jumuah.

Soon after MCNET was formed the Math Building which included the MSA room was demolished  for a parking lot adjacent to the current mini-dome.  It was in 1994 that we bought a small house for $14000  on Division Street in Johnson City . We renovated the property and it was MCNET’s home base till 2008.

Our community through these years  grew quickly from 5-10 brothers to over 75 brothers and sisters who used to show up for Jumuah. And our facility was becoming small to accommodate them. Sunday school  which used to use classrooms at ETSU on Sundays, also moved to the Division Street facility.

With the community continually growing we bought the Antioch Road property in the late 1990s and began construction of the current Islamic Center in 2007. We started using this facility in July 2008. More programs were added. We can now accommodate Muslim scholars and their programs, and regular visitors small and large from the non-Muslim community visit us.
